Councillors from all political parties have welcomed the review. Such a review takes place every 20 years.

Leader of Gosport Borough Council, Cllr Mark Hook, said: ‘Re-drawing ward boundaries is something that has to be done every now and again. We're helping the commission in its work wherever we can.

‘We've looked at the number of councillors we have, and have decided we can operate with fewer of them. This would mean a more efficient way of working.

‘I'd encourage residents to get involved in this process, which is all about local democracy.’

After the last boundary review in 2000, the council was expanded from 30 seats to 34.

Following the current 10-week consultation, the commission will continue to review the proposed boundaries, and locals will have a chance to comment again, during the summer. Parliament will approve the commission's final proposal.

Liberal Democrat leader, Cllr Peter Chegwyn, said: ‘At the moment, we have no idea what the commission is going to propose.

‘But all parties are in favour of the reduction because we’re a relatively small authority, so 28 seats ought to be okay.

‘I only hope that the commission keeps the wards limited to the community boundaries, such as Elson and Forton – but it’s important to get the numbers even.’

Commission chairman, Professor Colin Mellors, urged Gosport residents to get involved.

He said: ‘Just tell us what you think and give us some details why you think that. It’s really simple, so do get involved.’

The commission has a dedicated section on its website where people can give their views.
