A CLASS to lower the risk of older people falling over is starting next month.

Anyone over 55 can sign up to the new Steady and Strong class in Wickham designed to increase strength and stability and prevent falls.

Councillor Patricia Stallard, executive member for public health, said: '˜Developing strength and balance is vitally important in preventing falls, a major source of injury in older people.

'˜Around a third of people aged 65 and over experience a fall each year but specific, tailored exercises have been proven to be effective in reducing falls and fractures.

'˜We are delighted to get behind a scheme aimed at helping people to live independently for longer.'

The classes start on September 5 at midday at The Wickham Centre, off Mill Lane. It is £4 a session. To sign up for the new class call Floyd Foster on 07768 346450.
