READER'S OPINION: Whoever thought that cobbles were a good idea needs to be shot

I have just returned from a shopping trip to Commercial Road.

Commercial Road

I will not be doing that again in a hurry but will choose to go to a more shopper-friendly environment.

I am disabled and walking is painful for me so I need to sit and rest frequently.

The council is spending a lot of money to upgrade the Commercial Road precinct but whoever thought cobbles was a good idea needs to be shot.

Walking on cobbles when walking is already difficult, is painful, and pushing wheels, whether a pram, walking aid, shopping trolley or a wheelchair, is more difficult than on a flat surface and a very bumpy ride for the occupant of the ‘wheels’. And where are the seats?

The refurb isn’t finished yet so more seating may be on its way, but will any of it be covered and sheltered from the rain?

I have money to spend preferring to go to actual shops than to shop online, which may well make me part of the minority.

However, if shops want customers like me to come and spend our money, supply a few chairs around your stores.

Don’t make me stand when I am getting details about products I am interested in, or stand waiting interminably for an assistant where they appear to be few and far between.

We already have charity shops in the city centre – when we see the estate agents taking over empty shops it really will be the end of the centre of Portsmouth for a worthwhile shopping trip.
