Search launched for vulnerable person off Hayling Island

Police launched a land and sea search for a vulnerable person after a concern for welfare call was received.

The person became known to police just before 1am.
Officers worked alongside Hayling, Selsey and Portsmouth coastguard rescue teams including a helicopter crew, and RNLI lifeboat teams in efforts to find the person.

The lifeboats and helicopter conducted a sea search, while coastguard rescue teams searched on land, with a police presence, at Hayling.

A spokesperson for the Solent Coastguard said: ‘Police requested from us a maritime and coastal search at around 1.45am, they were contacted about an hour before this about the person in question.

‘Portsmouth RNLI and a coastguard rescue helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent were involved.

‘The person was later found by police and taken into their care.’
