Southsea volunteers prepare for annual beach clean

The Marine Conservation Society’s annual Beachwatch clean takes place on Saturday, September 17.

As well as clearing litter, volunteers will log what they find.

The survey forms part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), co-ordinated by American organisation, the Ocean Conservancy and run by the Marine Conservation Society in the UK.

Councillor Luke Stubbs, Tory deputy leader of Portsmouth City Council, is co-leading the event.

Cllr Stubbs says that by surveying the same areas year-after-year, meaningful comparisons can be made on how the state of the beaches in the UK and elsewhere is changing over time.

The event takes place on the Saturday between 10am and midday.

The mass clean-up will cover a 300-metre stretch between South Parade Pier and The Pyramids Centre.

The meeting point is next to the long shelter by Rocksby’s café.

No equipment is necessary and there is no need to register in advance.

The public event has been hailed a success in recent years.
