Teenager Jack chops locks for good causes

A GENEROUS teenager has overcome his fears and had his first haircut in nearly three years to raise money for charity.

Fifteen-year-old Jack Compton decided to finally get a trim and has raised over £200 in the process.

And it’s not just the money that’s going to charity – Jack is also donating his hair to a charity that makes wigs for children who have had chemotherapy, The Little Princess Trust.

Jack, from Leigh Park, is on the autistic spectrum and has social anxiety, but still faced his fears to fundraise.

He said: ‘I’m really pleased with the money I’ve raised. It was really scary, but definitely not as bad as I expected.’

Chopping over two years of Jack’s hair took hairdresser Jodie Vinall over an hour.

Jodie, who works at Headrush in Southsea, said: ‘It was definitely the longest boy’s hair I’ve ever done, but Jack was very brave and calm. His mum ended up getting much more nervous than he was.’

Jack’s mother Sally Compton, 46, said: ‘There’s a lot of truth in me being more nervous than he was.

‘I’m extremely proud of him. I’ve seen so many posts supporting him, they’ve brought a tear to my eye and put a lump in my throat.’

While her main emotion was pride, Sally said she was also slightly relieved that Jack has finally had it cut.

She said: ‘It’s a bit of a relief. His hair was way down his back. Having it cut has given him so much confidence.’

The two charities, both of which Jack chose, are the Urban Vocal Group and The Little Princess Trust. The Urban Vocal Group brings people of different backgrounds together through singing. It’s a charity which is close to Jack’s heart as not only does he sing with the group, but his mother Sally and hairdresser Jodie are also part of the charity.

The Little Princess Trust spokeswoman Helen Creese said: ‘A huge heartfelt thank you goes out to Jack for donating his hair.

‘We hope that Jack’s donation will help raise awareness of our plight to provide real-hair wigs for all children, and perhaps his actions will inspire others to do the same.’
