Thousands of people soak up sun and 90s music at Southsea event

People of all ages went to Castle Field, in Southsea, yesterday to see popular act Rhythm of the 90s.

Previously, the group had taken to Southsea Bandstand for their gig but organiser Nick Courtney wanted to do something bigger this time.

Nick said: ‘It has been amazing and the crowd were incredible.

‘Everyone was dancing and having a good time. There were kids dancing on their parents shoulders and people who grew up with these songs joining in. Rhythm of the 90s always get a good response.’

He added: ‘We wanted to hold this event on Castle Field to have more space for people and make it safer.’

Nick thanked Portsmouth City Council for allowing them to hold the free event.

‘To have a free event on a Sunday for the whole city is absolutely amazing,’ he said.

Paula Bartlett, from Copnor, went along with her sons Issac, seven, and James, five. She said: The atmosphere, the music, I couldn’t fault it.

‘It was fantastic and Castle Field was packed with people.

‘But despite it being busy, it was a family event and lots of youngsters were there enjoying themselves.’

Rhythm of the 90s will be performing at the Pyramids on August 12 and will be on the main stage at Victorious Festival later that month.

Councillor Donna Jones, leader of the city council, said: ‘We have been committed to increasing events to ensure people who live here enjoy our amazing city.

‘The success of Rhythm of the 90s was yet another example of people coming together to enjoy their seafront. This is what it is all about, people enjoying themselves in beautiful public spaces.’
