NATIONAL: Earthquake causes tremors south west of England and Wales

INVESTIGATIONS are taking place after a '˜magnitude 4.4' earthquake affected the south west of England and Wales.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) says it is currently analysing data after a tremor shook the region just over an hour ago. According to the BBC, early data from the United States Geological Survey indicated the incident measured 4.4 on the Richter Scale.

It is believed the epicentre of the earthquake was 20km north-north-east of Swansea.

Police and residents across Wales took to Twitter to discuss the incident, with Port Talbot Town Football Club – in the south of the country – even temporarily halting its 2pm fixture against Taff’s Well as the tremor played out.

A spokesperson for the club said on the social network: ‘43’ - temporary stop in play. A recorded earthquake in the area. Incredible.’

South Wales Police in Cardiff tweeted soon after: ‘There has been a minor earthquake throughout South Wales. No need for you to contact the emergency services unless you have something to report, ie:- injuries or damage. Hope this sets your minds at rest. SWP.’

The convulsion is also believed to have affected some parts of the south of England and the West Midlands.

The BGS said an event of this magnitude only occurs once every two to three years in the UK.
