Sleeping rough in modern Britain is unacceptable, says Gosport MP

GOSPORT MP Caroline Dinenage said we have to tackle the '˜root cause' of homelessness.

She said: ‘It is entirely unacceptable that in modern Britain people are faced with the fear of sleeping rough.

‘I’m pleased that since 2010 the government has made more than £500m available to help councils and the voluntary sector tackle homelessness, but we need to make sure this funding is directed towards combatting the root causes.

‘Early intervention to stop young people becoming homeless in the first place, as well as support services to help individuals overcome the factors contributing to their situation, are important.

‘I welcomed the chancellor’s Budget announcement of increased funding for the Rough Sleeping Social Impact Bond and I will be keen to see how this is implemented both locally and nationally.’

Havant MP Alan Mak said that homelessness was ‘very low’ across Havant.

‘But I’m glad that efforts are ongoing to help the small number who need assistance,’ he said.
