UPDATE: Four hurt as refuse truck overturns on M27

The M27 was blocked between Fareham and Portsmouth today after a major accident.

Highways England said three lanes were shut eastbound between J11 and J12 because of a collision in which a refuse vehicle overturned.

The agency said drivers should expect delays.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Cosham, Wickham and Fareham were at the scene.

A spokesman said: “Traffic is building - avoid area if possible.

The service tweeted: ‘Crews on scene dealing with RTC (Road Traffic Collision) involving an HGV on its side, on the M27 just prior to junction 12 eastbound.’

Hampshire Police said: ‘We received a call at 10.50am to reports of a lorry which had overturned between junctions 11 and 12.

‘Four people were in the lorry. Three suffered minor injuries, one more serious but not life-threatening.

‘Lanes 2 and 3 are closed for recovery of the lorry which make take some time due to fuel leakage. Lane 1 and hard shoulder are open for traffic to get past.’
