Warning of rail journey disruption over Easter holidays

RAIL passengers are being warned to check journeys before they travel over Easter as work begins on one of the biggest investment programmes ever carried out on Britain's rail network.

The work, which will take place across the south west, will include a £1.4m project to replace eight sets of points at Waterloo.

The track will also be renewed in the Southampton area and a railway bridge will be replaced near Wandsworth Town station.

The work has been timed for the four-day Easter break as, on average, fewer than half the usual 4.5m people use the railway each day.

The majority of the railway will remain open throughout the weekend but there will be changes to some services and passengers are being advised to check before they travel.

John Halsall, route managing director for Wessex route, said: ‘While the work will cause some temporary inconvenience, people will ultimately benefit from an improved and reliable railway.’
