Lane two of the westbound route, between the A27 and Portsbridge Roundabout and J12 for the M275, was shut at about 4.45pm, Highways England said.

The lane was cleared just before 5pm, with vehicles put on the hard shoulder.

Live traffic maps from Google showed drivers were still facing delays at 5.25pm, from the A3(M) at Farlington and the A27 at Havant.

Highways England said on Twitter: ‘#M27 #Westbound where it splits to go onto the #M275 we have a lane 2 closure on the main carriageway for a traffic collision.

‘We have #TrafficOfficers towards. Red 'X' means lanes closed.’

It later added: ‘All vehicles have been moved to the hard shoulder. All lanes are now running. Thank you for your patience.’
