Traffic officers are out on the A32 and A272 this weekend, two roads well known for dangerous and anti-social motorcycling.

The ‘enforcement operation’ in the Meon Valley over the Easter weekend is they say, part of their regular routine – but this year has an extra dimension.

A police spokeswoman said: ‘As in previous years, we are increasing our patrolling as the weather improves.

‘The operation is primarily focused on ensuring the roads are safe for motorists and reducing the risk of collisions.

‘However, we are in a public health emergency, and it is reasonable to expect officers to ask motorists why they are out and whether their journey is absolutely necessary.

‘We will be engaging with motorists, explaining the regulations and encouraging those without a good reason to be outdoors to go home.

Yesterday traffic officers were seen patrolling the A32 north of Wickham, and using the car park of the Roebuck Inn, which closed after going bust before the coronavirus pandemic, as a base.

The force says enforcement will be used as a last resort.

The spokeswoman added: ‘We may need to stop vehicles as part of the operation, and given the current circumstances, it is reasonable to expect officers to ask some motorists whether they have a valid reason for being outdoors.’
