UPDATE: Woman taken to hospital after flat fire in Southsea

A woman had to be rescued from a block of flats in the early hours of this morning after a fire broke out.

Firefighters were called to Everell Court in Southsea just after 1am after the alarm went off.

Crew manager Steve Jolliffe from Southsea Fire Station said the fire had been started after the woman started cooking food and fell asleep.

Residents phoned the fire brigade and evacuated the building.

Mr Jolliffe said the woman was on her own in the flat and had to be led out by fire crews.

He also urged people not to try cooking late at night when they might be feeling tired.

The woman was treated by ambulance staff before being taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital as a precaution.
