WATCH: Council unveils Tommy statue in Havant for Remembrance commemorations

TO MARK 100 years since the end of the First World War, a council has unveiled a permanent statue known as Tommy as part of the There But Not There campaign.

Along with army representatives Havant Borough Council's chief executive, Sandy Hopkins, and councillors Peter Wade and Ken Smith, unveiled Tommy at The Plaza on Civic Centre Road.

The 6ft aluminium specially-designed metal figure depicts the outline of a lone soldier.

A short ceremony and speeches were delivered by councillors and members of the 16th Regiment Royal Artillery.

Speaking of those who gave their lives in the war, Mayor of Havant, Councillor Peter Wade, said: '˜I'm sure everyone in the world appreciates what they gave for us all.

'˜Unveiling the Tommy is really good, I think we should definitely do more of this sort of thing to remember the people who have sacrificed the ultimate.'

There But Not There is an organisation supporting a number of armed forces charities.

A successful application to the organisation has enabled Havant Borough Council to provide 15 community groups with a clear, seated silhouette figure.
