Southsea greengrocer Alec Rose returned home 49 years ago today after an epic voyage around the world in his yacht Lively Lady.

The extraordinary scenes as hundreds of thousands of people flocked to Southsea seafront to greet him on July 4, 1968, are captured in this newsreel from the British Pathe archive.
