THIS WEEK IN 1999: Islanders revel in traditional carnival

It was carnival time again on Hayling Island.Â

The sun stayed indoors but the rest of Hayling Island went out to play on a host of carnival rides and games.

Traditional merry-go-rounds and bumper cars were joined by more modern attractions such as an X-Files maze and a giant climbing wall. The biggest queues formed for the baby competition, where mums clutching babes in arms lined up to get their children registered.

The carnival was organised by Hayling Island Lions Club for the second year running.

Overall winners were a team of holidaymakers from Fishery Creek Caravan Park with their millennium babies (pictured).

Camp owner Ian Pettit said: '˜These people come down every year from all over the country for the carnival week.'Â
