McIntyre lifts English title with revenge win

McIntyre stormed to the English light-heavyweight crown with a unanimous points win over 10 nail-biting rounds in Portsmouth.

The Leigh Park powerhouse picked up a 96-93, 97-93 98-93 success in front of his raucous band of followers.

This observer had it by a closer margin than that, but there’s no doubt it was impressive showing from the 28-year-old in an exciting showdown.

And it settled the scored after the Hertfordshire man edged the first match-up between the pair in 2014.

McIntyre floored Shinkwin in the second and hurt him on a number of other occasions with thunderous shots.

The former England amateur captain dug deep and caused his own problems, however, in the needle contest.

It was McIntyre’s arm which was held aloft after the final bell with a win which will now open doors for him.

There was extra poignancy with the success coming days after the burial of the 15-1 man’s grandfather.

Elsewhere, David Birmingham chalked up a fifth-round stoppage success over David Miko in their super-lightweight match-up.

Danny Couzens delivered a powerful fourth round on the way to a 40-35 points win over Hungarian Istvan Orsos over four rounds.

Michael McKinson opened the card with a comfortable and controlled 40-35 points verdict over Duane Green.

Southampton’s Charlie Quinn won every round against rough-house journeyman Mitch Mitchell in their cruiserweight clash.

Former amateur hot-shot, Jimmy Cooper, did the same against Qasim Hussain at super-featherweight.

Bournemouth’s Sam Jones edged a 39-38 decision against Ali Wyatt at super-lightweight.
