Chances slip away as all is not Wells for Havant

It was a first defeat of the season for Knight’s side who came away disappointed with the outcome.

‘It was a frustrating afternoon because we didn’t make the most of the opportunities that we had,’ said Knight.

‘Tunbridge were a decent side and deserved to win but at the same time we thought they were beatable.

‘They were more accurate and precise in their delivery than we were.

‘We also got on the wrong side of the referee which presented our opponents with three or four kickable penalties.

‘In the end they made the difference.

‘I didn’t have to say anything to the players afterwards and just left it to them.

‘They were honest and made all the right noises about what needs to be done.’

Havant’s only points in the first half came from a Joel Knight penalty as they trailed 19-3 at the break.

The visitors got themselves back in it with two tries in the opening stages of the second half from Loz Blackburn and Jerome Trail.

With Havant applying all the pressure the home side broke out to seal the win with an outstanding try from their full-back who ran the length of the pitch to score.

‘We felt we let the game get away from us,’ said Knight.

‘What is important now is how we react to our first defeat.’

Four penalties from Dan Lee helped Fareham Heathens maintain their winning start in Hampshire one.

Heathens won 12-10 at Ellingham & Ringwood.

Twice in the first half, Heathens paid the price for poor kicks, presenting the home side with two tries.

In the second half the visitors played strongly but they had to rely on the boot of Lee.

He kept his nerve with time running out to slot over the winning penalty from in front of the posts.
