James Vince's England call-up means Hampshire will be a batsman and skipper light against Nottinghamshire in their Specsavers County Championship game tomorrow.

That means Will Smith, who won the title as Durham captain in 2009, will lead the side in four-day cricket during Vince’s absence.

Sean Ervine will guide the county in both white ball competitions.

Hampshire director of cricket, Giles White, is excited for Smith to take the reins for the short term.

He said: ‘Will has captained Durham to the championship and has experience, I think he will feed off that.

‘He has been great for us since he has been here.

‘He’s a natural leader in the way he goes about things, he is bright and I’m sure he will be successful.

‘It is always a miss when one of your best players isn’t with you but we are thankful he is playing for England, the club is very proud of him.

‘It gives an opportunity for someone else to step up with the bat and a leadership opportunity for a couple of the other senior players.’

Zimbabwean Ervine returns from his finger injury to replace Vince in the squad, while Tom Alsop is included after two centuries for the second XI this week.
