Adams: Not a hope Pompey were better than us

The Pilgrims boss reckoned there was nothing to choose between the two sides in the League One encounter.

He branded the match ‘rubbish’ and suggested a goalless draw would have been fair.

Kal Naismith’s 25th-minute strike proved decisive in a game short on clear-cut chances.

Gareth Evans went on to force a brilliant point-blank save from Pilgrims keeper Remi Matthews on 52 minutes, while Naismith also struck the post 12 minutes from time.

But the Plymouth manager was adamant his side deserved to return to Home Park with a point.

‘It had 0-0 draw written all over it but we make a mistake and they get a goal,’ Adams told the Plymouth Herald.

‘I thought we passed the ball well at times in the first period but still we didn’t get enough opportunities on goal.

‘There was no way that Portsmouth were better than us. Not a hope in this world.

‘The game had 0-0 written all over it. There was nothing in it. Neither side had any real efforts on goal.

‘So from my point of view, it’s the worst game between Portsmouth and Plymouth I have been involved in. It was rubbish.

‘Both sides probably lacked a bit of firepower and the goalkeepers had no saves to make.’

Plymouth’s Yann Songo’o headed over the bar from six yards on 24 minutes.

And within 60 seconds, Naismith capitalised on a mistake by Argyle keeper Matthews.

Adams added: ‘We had some good balls in the box but we weren’t able to get that goal to get back in the game.

‘They weren’t in our box in the first half. We were the better team.

‘We passed the ball well at times but still we didn’t get enough opportunities on goal.

‘In the second half we went for it but, as a spectacle, it wasn’t great.’
