Horndean battle past Bournemouth… AFC Portchester cruise to success

Horndean battled into the next round of the Wessex League Cup with a 2-1 win at Bournemouth Poppies. 

Both teams made 10 changes to their starting line-ups and it was the visitors who struck first.

On 12 minutes Mitch Frost met an inswinging free-kick to net with a powerful header.

Joy was short-lived, however, as the Poppies equalised five minutes later.

With the game finely balanced, Dan Manuel settled the clash for Michael Birmingham’s Deans on 75 minutes with a blistering volley.

Meanwhile, AFC Portchester cruised to a 4-1 home win over New Milton Town in the Russell-Cotes Cup at the Crest Finance Stadium.

Joel Jackson put the Royals ahead on 10 minutes, converting a cross at the far post.

New Milton equalised within five minutes but Charlie Cooper restored the hosts’ lead on the stroke of half-time.

Dale Mason added a third in the second period before Dan Simmons put the icing on the cake at the death.

Paulsgrove upset their Wessex League division one hosts Follands Sports in the same competition.

The Hampshire Premier League outfit delivered a 1-0 success at Follands Park.

Petersfield Town produced a second-half fightback to beat Liphook United 2-1 at Love Lane.

The Rams trailed at the break but goals from Harry Tremlett in the 61st minute and Matty Rowland five minutes from time turned the game on its head.

In the Portsmouth Senior Cup, Baffins Milton Rovers romped to a 7-1 win at AFC Petersfield.

Moneyfields travel to Hythe & Dibden on Wednesday in the Russell-Cotes Cup (7.45pm).

Moneys’ under-18s meet Team Solent in the FA Youth Cup third qualifying round on the same day at Test Park.

United Services’ reserves host Fareham Town in the Portsmouth Senior Cup on Thursday.
