After Conor Chaplin's yellow card, five more bizarre bookings
It was certainly a novel way to get booked.
With Pompey 2-0 up against Cambridge United and time running out for the visitors, Conor Chaplin drifted out to the right wing - and immediately incurred the referee’s wrath.
Oliver Langford booked the young star, having apparently decided that Chaplin had noticed his number was about to be displayed for a substituion and had deliberately positioned himself further away from the dugouts.
It was a bizzare bookings - but not so odd as these red and yellow cards:-
1. Paul Scholes
Scholes produced his very own Hand of God against Zenit St Petersburg in 2008. Wes Brown crossed the ball into the box where Scholes blatantly handled the ball which ended up in the back of the net. He was given a second yellow and sent off.
2 Paul Gasgoine
Whilst refereeing a match between Rangers and Hibernian, Dougie Smith dropped his yellow cards on the pitch. Fun-loving Gasgoine picked up the cards and went to give them back to Smith, but not before showing him a yellow card. Smith returned the favour by actually presenting Gazza with a yellow card.
3. Dean Windass
Windass managed to get himself a yellow card without being on the field of play. The Hull veteran was warming up on the sidelines when Stoke’s Rory Delap came to take one of his infamous long throws. Windass proceeded into the most theatrical warm up routine possible. He was shown a yellow card for “ungentlemanly conduct”.
4. Nearly everyone
In regional first division match in Spain, referee Jose Manuel Barro Escandon showed red cards to all but three players on each team. In the game between Recreativo Linense and Saladillo de Algecircas a mass brawl broke out after a player was sent off nine minutes after half time. The referee abandoned the game, but then marched to the dressing room to dish out nine red cards to each team.
5. A Parrot
Referee Gary Bailey was baffled by a whistle from the crowd during a game between Hatfield and Hertford Heath which kept interfering with play. He realised the noise was coming from near a woman who revealed it was her parrot that kept making the whistling sound. Bailey served up a straight red to the parrot who was asked to leave with the owner.
