Cook: Pompey were second best

The Blues made a swift exit from this season’s competition after defeat to a team sitting 16 places below them in League Two.

Adebayo Akinfenwa put the Chairboys into the hat with an 84th-minute winner, nodding the ball over a scrambling David Forde after the keeper had come off his line to punch away Garry Thompson’s cross.

Wycombe had taken a first-half lead when Forde’s punch from a Joe Jacobson centre deflected off Christian Burgess and left Paris Cowan-Hall with a simple tap-in.

Gareth Evans levelled on 47 minutes with a neat finish from Enda Stevens’ low cross. But Pompey struggled to take control – and Cook conceded he could have no arguments with the result as Pompey suffered a third-straight loss at Fratton Park.

He said: ‘We’d be here all night if we were going to evaluate the game. We weren’t good enough today. We were the second-best team on the pitch throughout.

‘Wycombe were full value for the win, in my opinion. I’m not going to criticise my players, but just say that Wycombe fully deserved it.

‘We can’t keep having results like this. Winning one minute, and then losing the next.

‘This highlights our inconsistency and it’s something we need to put right.’
