Gosport Borough players delivered some 'home truths' following defeat at Hendon

Gosport Borough's recent slump continued with a 2-1 defeat at Hendon condemning Lee Molyneaux's men to a third successive Southern League Premier South defeat.

Alarmingly, Borough have won only one of their last eight games and slipped to 10th in the league.

It's a run of results that have caused concern for Gosport boss Molyneaux in his first season in charge.

‘These are really tough times at the moment,’ said Molyneaux.

‘I shared a few home truths with the players after the game.

‘Some of our players who have played higher have underestimated this league and have allowed their standards to drop.

‘Our recent results are difficult to swallow.

‘The saying 'hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard' is us in a nutshell at the moment

‘Maybe we think that we are a lot better than we are at the moment.

‘One thing is certain is that we need to turn it around now if we are to achieve anything this season.

‘I am looking for a huge reaction from my team.’

After an even first half, the game sprang to life after when Shaun Lucien cut in from the left and fired an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the net.

The goal rocked Borough and the home side took control after that.

It took a couple of last-ditch clearances off the goalline and the woodwork to prevent the hosts adding a second goal.

Despite the introduction of new signing Oluwatobi Adekunke, it remained one-way traffic and it was no surprise when Hendon doubled their lead.

Joe White calmly finished after the ball had been headed off the line 15 minutes from time.

With three minutes to go, substitute Matt Paterson gave the visitors hope with a smart finish from 10 yards.

But it was too little too late and Borough's miserable start to the new year continued.

‘In the second half Hendon wanted it more than we did,’ said Molyneaux.

‘Once they scored, we huffed and puffed but got nowhere.

‘In the last 10 minutes we started playing but we have to do that for the whole 90 minutes.’
