Gosport boss Molyneaux: ‘We didn't allow ourselves to be bullied … mentally we were stronger'

A second half Theo Lewis goal proved enough to topple the league leaders.

Borough boss Lee Molyneaux believes the result and the performance can be just the shot in the arm his new-look team needs.

'It is a good result and nothing short of what we deserved,' said Molyneaux.

'Hopefully it will give us the boost in confidence moving forwards.

'We showed great determination and desire in a fine team performance.

'These are the qualities we must maintain if we are to achieve our play-off ambitions.’

A low key first half ended goalless with neither team creating many chances.

The best chance fell to the visiting striker who fired straight at goalkeeper Kingsley Latham, on loan from Southampton.

Borough were quick out of the blocks at the start of the second half, grabbing the winner four minutes after the restart.

Matt Paterson latched onto a good through ball from Sam Roberts to get into a good position out wide.

Instead of cutting in and shooting, the striker held the ball up and picked out the run of Theo Lewis with a perfectly-weighted pass.

Lewis completed the move by smashing his low shot into the bottom corner.

When Truro tried to hit back in the final quarter, the Borough defence held firm.

The win means Gosport have now beaten the top four teams in the division - Chesham, Truro, Tiverton and Taunton. Contrastly, they have failed to beat four of the bottom five at Privett Park.

'We scored a nicely-worked goal and then defended well when we had to,' said Molyneaux of the weekend success.

'At the back Ryan Woodford, Roberts and Michael Elechi deserve great credit.

'Also Josh Huggins epitomised the spirit needed in the team.

'The introduction of a couple of loanee players from Oxford United (Elechi and Aaron McCreadie) has made a difference.

'They both played well and we have now got healthy competition for places.

'We showed greater physicality and didn't allow ourselves to be bullied.

'Mentally we were stronger.'

Despite the win, Borough remain ninth - eight points adrift of the play-off places having played more games than anyone else.

Next up for Borough is a home clash with relegation-battling Walton Casuals next Saturday.
