Gosport Borough's recent improvement ended with a 3-0 Southern League Premier South defeat at title-chasing Chesham.

The defeat ended a run of two successive wins for Lee Molyneaux's side and keeps them ninth - eight points adrift of the play-off places.

Molyneaux felt the conditions played a big part in the defeat.

'There was a horrendous wind blowing straight down the pitch and Chesham played the conditions better than we did,' he said.

'They were better than us at executing their game plan.

'The whole time we were just a goal behind we were still in it.

'I always felt at that stage that we could nick a goal and get a draw.

'Once they got their second we found ourselves chasing the game.

'It is unlike us to concede three goals.

'Our game plan in the conditions was to keep the ball on the floor.

'This worked against us because we got caught over-playing in the wrong areas.'

Borough had the wind in their favour in the first half and created the first chance.

Charlie Davis fired in a free-kick which the home keeper tipped over the bar.

Chesham started to apply pressure and on 39 minutes took the lead through Eoin Casey.

Ten minutes from the end Zak Joseph grabbed a killer second goal and four minutes later Borough made a mess of a goal-kick and Casey netted again.

That ensured Gosport conceded three goals for only the third time in 31 league games this term - after a 4-4 home draw with Dorchester and a 3-2 loss at Taunton.

'The way the results went, nothing much changed,' said Molyneaux.

'We are still the same number of points outside the play-offs but one more week has passed.

'Our two home games for us this week are crucial.

'If we can beat Salisbury and Farnborough then that will give us four wins from five games.

'That could propel us to within touching distance of the play-offs.

'We just have to take it a game at a time and see where it gets us.'

Former Gosport players Marley Ridge and Sam Argent both scored as Hartley Wintney won 3-0 at lowly Walton Casuals in the same division.
