Horndean boss Birmingham praises his side’s ‘attitude’ after come-from-behind win against Fleet

Michael Birmingham praised the character of Horndean after they came from behind to record a 2-1 Wessex Premier win against Fleet Town at Five Heads Park last night.

The hosts fell behind to an early penalty but hit back with goals from Harry Jackson and Robbie Taw to lead at half-time.A solid defensive display after the break earned Horndean their second home league win in four days – they had also come from a goal down to trounce Bournemouth Poppies 5-2 at the weekend.‘The penalty we gave away was a soft one because there was no need to go for the ball,’ said Birmingham‘We showed good character to hit back after that.‘Jake Thomson produced a wonderful through ball for our first goal and Robbie Taw’s volley was unbelievable for our second one.‘In the second half we had our backs against the wall playing up the slope‘We didn’t move the ball that well and gave possession away cheaply at times.‘Fleet have to be given some credit because they were very direct and squeezed us.‘In the end though we came away with three points against a very physical side.‘That was mainly down to our attitude.’After their early setback Horndean hit back to equalise in the 18th minute.Thomson’s quickly taken free-kick found Steve Hall who lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper.Jackson was on the spot to tap the ball into the empty net.On 38 minutes Taw crashed an unstoppable first time volley into the top left hand corner of the net to put the hosts in front.Horndean’s best chance in the second half came on 75 minutes.Liam Bush whipped a free-kick across the six yard box but there was no-one to get a finishing touch.Fleet went close two minutes from time with a header that flew over the top but Horndean held out.
