I'm no Bobby Moore, says the Newport defender aiming to stop Pompey

One played 108 times for England - the other is a journeyman defender who'll be trying to stop Pompey tomorrow.

And Newport County’s Darren Jones is the first to admit he’s no Bobby Moore.

The comparison - or rather lack of it - came from team mates after 32-year-old Jones had a bit of a ‘mare in a 3-0 home defeat against Barnet in midweek.

Just days earlier, he had been compared to World Cup winner Moore by teammate Janoi Donacien.

On the comparisons to the England legend, Jones told the South Wales Argus they were never meant to go beyond the dressing room.

“That was just a bit of banter between the lads, which has obviously got out,” he said. “It was a bit of fun – but I certainly wasn’t Bobby Moore the other night!

“The spirit between the lads is spot on but Tuesday night we just didn’t turn up.

“We should have won that. It should have been one of the easy games.

“But we’re working hard and we go down to Portsmouth in high spirits.”

Jones, whose career includes stints at Forest Green Rovers, Hereford United, Aldershot Town, Shrewsbury Town and AFC Wimbledon went on to claim that Pompey’s fans might give Newport a boost.

“We can go and play without any fear. They are obviously the favourites but we can go down there and play and express ourselves.

“And their fans can turn on them as well if they’re not doing so well and 15,000 people on your back ain’t nice!” he said.
