‘It’s massively frustrating, you feel like it’s two seasons lost’ – Gosport Borough midfielder Pat Suraci on another possible null and void

Pat Suraci can see no other alternative but a second successive 'non-elite' football season going to 'waste'.

But the Brazilian-born Gosport Borough midfielder is trying to focus on the 'positives' during a third nationwide lockdown in less than a year.

The 22-year-old, who also heads up Borough's centre of excellence with team-mate and best friend Joe Lea, conceded that the only feasible outcome is to scrap the current Southern League campaign.

Gosport, who play in the Southern League Premier South, have only got through seven of 38 league games this season and would almost certainly need to play up to three times a week in a bid to complete their 2020-21 campaign.

Shaun Gale's side have not had a competitive fixture since an FA Trophy defeat at Dorchester Town on October 31 with 'non-elite' remaining paused.

The Trident League boards - Southern League, Isthmian League and Northern Premier League - have already expressed their desire for the season to 'cease immediately and be declared null and void'.

And with clubs unable to return to action until after Saturday March 6 at present, Suraci - currently in his third spell at Privett Park as a player - believes the season will be scrapped.

‘I think it looks like, from my perspective, the season is going to end,' he said.

‘I know it’s been put up to vote but I just can’t see how they’re going to carry on with it.

‘It’s massively frustrating because you feel like it’s two seasons lost, because what have you got to show for it?

‘Luckily I’m young so I’ve got a lot of seasons ahead of me, but it’s never nice to waste these seasons.

‘It’s hard to explain (feeling without football).

‘It hasn’t even been stop-start, it’s just stop now, we haven’t played since October and we’ve only played seven games in the league.

‘It’s been tough, especially after finishing in March last year.

'As a player it has been massively frustrating but I’m just looking at the positives, trying to keep fit, staying healthy, keep training - because it's the only thing you can do at the moment.'

Questions have been raised over how 'non-elite' clubs might get competitive action if allowed to return playing in April, or before, should 2020/21 be declared 'null and void'.

There have been some suggestions of mini leagues or cup competitions being set up in order to get players back on the field before the usual summer break.

But ex-Southampton youth teamer Suraci does not adhere to the idea of creating competitions to simply fill a gap in the calendar.

‘It’s a really difficult situation for everyone,' he added.

'I just don’t think it’s feasible to ask players to come back and play three times a week.

‘I know some local mini leagues have been talked about, but I’m not sure on the idea on that.

‘As much as you want to play, I don’t know whether it’s better to go back in August and start fresh.'
