Michael Doyle crowned Pompey's player of the season

The Blues skipper celebrated an impressive first season at Fratton Park with 35 per cent of fans’ votes.

In what proved to be a two-horse race, Davies was narrowly behind, with 33 per cent of supporters giving him their backing.

The duo have been integral members of Paul Cook’s side since arriving from Sheffield United in the summer.

Combative midfielder Doyle, handed the captain’s armband in place of the outgoing Paul Robinson, had featured in all but one of Pompey’s League Two matches heading into today’s finale with champions Northampton.

The Irishman also boasted a goal-of-the-season contender, with a spectacular volley at Accrington among his two strikes.

And the 34-year-old’s impressive displays this term were rewarded in January when he signed a contract extension to stretch his Fratton Park stay to the summer of 2017.

Former Blades team-mate Davies has also won many admirers among the Fratton faithful this season.

The attacking full-back had 48 games to his name – the same as Doyle – before today’s Cobblers clash, with his all-action displays belying his 34 years.

Davies remains in talks over a new deal as he looks to extend a one-year stay on the south coast.

Defender Christian Burgess was third in the voting with eight per cent.
