Moneyfields bidding for ‘momentum’ ahead of Hampshire Senior Cup clash with AFC Bournemouth

Moneyfields should be driven on by the added incentive of handing Highworth Town some Southern League South Division 1 ‘payback’ this weekend.

That's the message from Moneys assistant manager Matt Jones as they aim to avenge a heavy defeat against the Gloucestershire club earlier in the season.

Dave Carter's side were drubbed 5-1 at Highworth in November, after falling 3-0 down inside 15 minutes.

That day is one Jones does not want his players to forget when Highworth visit Dover Road.

‘Highworth gave us a bit of a beating up at their place, we kind of owe them one,’ he stated.

‘We weren’t at it up there … ‘I’m hoping the boys will want to give them payback.

‘Going into the Bournemouth game, we want to have some momentum.'

Jones, taking the team at present with manager Carter away, described the 3-1 midweek defeat at Winchester City as 'not good enough'.

Moneyfields are third bottom, nine points above cellar dwellers Barnstaple having played two games less.

As well as aiming to secure their Southern League status this season, the Moneys are also still in the Portsmouth and Hampshire Senior Cups.

Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth travel to Dover Road for a semi-final county cup meeting next Tuesday.

And Jones is eager for Moneyfields to end a difficult season with a flourish.

‘We still need to pick up points,’ he outlined.

‘We’ve got (second-bottom) Basingstoke to play twice, which are going to be two big games.

‘We don’t just want to go through the rest of the season losing games.

‘We want to try to win as many as we can.

‘We need a little bit of momentum from somewhere.

‘It was not really good enough (at Winchester), it hasn’t really been good enough all season.'

Dan Wooden, who scored in the defeat at Winchester after dual-signing from AFC Portchester, will mainly be focused on the Royals' Wessex League Premier Division title push.

Lewis Fennemore (back) and Zak Sharp (foot) are both doubts for Highworth’s visit, while top scorer Steve Hutchings serves the final game of his three-match suspension.
