Moneyfields facing crazy fixture list once football resumes – there’s (at least) 36 games left and just 22 Saturdays in the calendar!

Moneyfields manager Dave Carter was pleased to receive some positive news following the Southern League announcing a planned restart date.

It's been a bleak few weeks without football for non-elite clubs in England amid the second nationwide lockdown.

But Carter can finally see 'some light at the end of the tunnel' with the Southern League set to resume on December 12 should Covid-19 restrictions allow them to do so.

And Moneyfields' participation in the FA Trophy means they will be back in action even earlier - on either Saturday, December 5, or between December 7-9 - with a first-round proper tie with Truro City at Dover Road to be arranged.

No matter which of those dates are decided, it's a quick return to playing for a team that have been unable to train since early November and who have been involved in just one competitive fixture after October 18.

But that does not bother boss Carter, who is just relishing playing games again.

‘We wanted to get straight back in as we’ve got a lot to do and a lot to get through and they haven’t extended the season,' he said.

‘I just want to get out the house, get back playing and get back involved in football.

‘We’ve just got to make a decision on whether we ask Truro whether they want to play the FA Trophy tie on the Saturday or the Tuesday.

‘There’s light at the end of the tunnel - I can see it!’

If and when the season does resume, Moneyfields are facing a crazy schedule in order to complete their matches with the Southern League sticking to the initial May 8 finish date.

Carter's side still have 34 (out of 38) league fixtures remaining as well as the FA Trophy tie and a Portsmouth Senior Cup semi-final with Fareham Town to squeeze in.

That means at least 36 games left in 2020/21 - with only 22 Saturdays remaining between the scheduled restart and season end - and that's if they resume on December 5 against Truro.

But it's something Carter is going to take in his stride and he feels he has the squad capable of dealing with the many matches ahead - even if it means calling on coaches Brett Poate and Gavin Spurway!

‘We’re going to be playing at least twice a week for the remainder of the season,' added the Moneys boss.

‘But it’s good, I love my football, it’s what I’m there for.

‘I do it for the enjoyment and not for the reward.

‘We’re looking forward to getting back into it.

We’ve got a lot of hard work to put in. We’ve got a nice big squad and I’m a lot happier with my squad this season - they’re all going to play a a part, including some of our youth players and reserve players, throughout the season.

‘The whole club is going to come into contention to get first team football.

‘We’ve got Mr Poate who’s been out running. We made a joke of it a few weeks ago so I think he’ll be back playing before the end of the season.

‘If we’re really desperate, we’ll ask Gavin Spurway to kick a ball!'
