No excuses for Pompey's defensive chaos

Gabor Gyepes insisted the juggling of Pompey's backline was no excuse for their defensive gaffes after they crashed to another defeat.

The Blues are on the brink of equalling their worst run of results in their history after a 2-1 loss at the hands of Scunthorpe last night.

That defeat made it 18 matches without a win for caretaker boss Guy Whittingham’s side and eight defeats on the bounce.

A loss at high-flying Bournemouth this weekend will match the previous worst – set in the 1975-76 season when Ian St John was boss.

Pompey are now 12/1 with local bookmakers the Betting Room to not win another game this season.

Poor defending was again the side’s downfall as Akpo Sodje grabbed both Scunthorpe goals with headers.

It was another new-look defence with Gyepes partnering Sam Sodje in the centre.

Gyepes knows the constant changes are a factor – but doesn’t accept that as a reason for making mistakes.

He said: ‘If the striker is free in the middle it’s someone’s mistake. When you play together you can know what your team-mate will do. That’s what we are missing.

‘At the moment it’s tough to reach anything because of that.

‘It’s hard to find a good answer, though. Perhaps we are looking for excuses for the result. And we can’t do that.

‘The goals are coming from someone’s mistakes.

‘It’s another game where we should have had a result, at least a point, but it’s happened again and it’s so frustrating.’
