Pompey have hit devastating form at the perfect time, but Cook was at lengths not to get carried away with their impressive progress.

He said: ‘The games are in single figures, the finishing line gets in sight and we all know the prize.

‘But if you get ahead of yourselves you will find yourselves in trouble, as a club we must stay focussed and take each game as it comes.’

‘I think everything went our way, the opening 5-10 minutes Grimsby were the better side and hit the post with a fantastic shot and David Forde made an outstanding save.

‘It caught us a little bit like a rabbit in the headlights, but then we took control of the game and I thought were excellent and really played well, everything about us looked good and strong.

‘It was an entertaining game for everyone to watch and great credit to Grimsby for coming to try to win the game. There were two teams trying to play a game of football.

‘Now we have a massive game on Saturday at Stevenage.’
