Pompey Cup replays revisited

The Blues were just two minutes away from knocking out the Championship high-fliers on their home turf.

And will be confident of finally finishing the job off against Mick McCarthy’s side with the help of the famous Fratton roar.

If they do, it will be Pompey’s fourth replay victory in the Cup in five outings.

It will also help erase the memory of the last time the Blues were forced to play it again in the famous, old competitiion – a 1-0 defeat at Conference side Aldershot.

Here, we take a look back the Pompey’s last five FA Cup replays.

Aldershot 1-0 Pompey

2014-15 - first round

Mark Moseley’s 81st-minute winner ensured Pompey lost to non-league opposition in the Cup for the first time in their history.

It was an awful performance from Andy Awford’s side, after the original game ended 2-2.

They could even have been knocked out at the stage, after Danny Hollands’ late goal earned them the replay.

Coventry 1-2 Pompey

2009-10 - third round

Aaron Mokoena was the Pompey hero on a cold night at the Ricoh Arena, scoring the winner in the last minute of extra-time.

The game looked destined for penalties, until the South Africa international skipper’s header set the Blues on another memorable Cup run to Wembley.

Leon Best opened the scoring for the Sky Blues on 22 minutes – and that looked to be enough to secure Coventry’s passage into round four.

However, an own goal from Stephen Wright on the stroke of full-time sent the game into extra-time, before unlikely hero Mokoena popped up with the winner.

Bristol City 0-2 Pompey

2008-09 - third round

After lifting the FA Cup at Wembley just seven months previous, holders Pompey’s defence of the trophy didn’t go quite as planned.

A scoreless draw at Fratton Park against Championship Bristol City in the third round meant an unexpected replay.

And a run of one win in eight matches suggested the Blues may fall at the first hurdle in the defence of their crown.

However, goals from Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar settled a pulsating tie and set up a home clash with Swansea in the fourth round - a game they lost 2-0.

Pompey 1-0 Liverpool

2003-04 - fifth round

Matt Taylor’s 77th-minute strike in the first game at Anfield cancelled out Michael Owen’s opener and ensured a trip south for the Reds.

But it was Richard Hughes who was the ultimate Blues hero, with his 72nd winner eventually settling the tie.

The substitute’s left-foot shot from 14 yards sealed victory and set up a quarter-final tie against Arsenal.

Aston Villa 1-0 Pompey

1997-98 - third round

Savo Milosevic’s goal on 21 minutes ended Pompey’s Cup hopes at the third round stage.

The tie only went to a replay after Simon Grayson earned the Villans a replay with an 88th-minute equaliser at Fratton Park.

Pompey lead 2-0 in front of their home fans thanks to a double from Craig Foster.

A Steve Staunton goal just before the break halved the deficit, before Grayson struck late on.
