Jackett: Victory is Portsmouth's only target at Peterborough

KENNY JACKETT has insisted Pompey head to Peterborough with victory only on their mind.

The Blues boss is adamant his team won't settle for a point in their top-of-the-table clash at London Road.

Pompey have the chance to move to the summit of League One with a win over the Posh today (3pm).

Jackett's unbeaten troops sit second in the table - just two points behind Steve Evans' men.

With promotion the target this season, the Blues boss could err on the side of caution and play for a draw.

However, Jackett stressed his sole focus is on returning to Fratton Park with three points in the bag.

He said: '˜You always approach games going for a win. As a manager, I wouldn't ever think you can set up to draw a game.

'˜For us, we want to try to breed some consistency if we can. That's been good so far. We know were we have been strong.

'˜But we also know the areas we need to improve as well.

'˜For us we always try to go and win the game '“ whether that be at home or away or against a team at the top or the bottom.

'˜We're going to need to be strong defensively because Peterborough have some really good options.

'˜But we also concentrate on our own game and how we can cause them problems '“ that is the key to doing well.

'˜Overall we're pleased with the start to the season and being unbeaten to the start is a great thing.'

Pompey and Peterborough have both underlined their promotion credentials during the opening seven matches of the campaign.

The Posh have won six and drawn one, while Jackett's men have racked up five victories and two draws.

The Blues boss sees Evans' outfit as a promotion rival.

And he feels taking points off those challenging for a play-off spot will be important if Pompey are to reach the Championship.

Jackett added: 'They'll certainly have aspirations of promotion. Whether they will be or not we'll see at the turn of the year.

'It's a very good league and all of the managers and teams can set you different tasks. It's hard to earn every single point you get.

'When you take points off promotion rivals, you're stopping other teams building up.

'Traditionally, the top six get 70-plus points. We weren't far off that last season with 66. We want to beat all of our totals.

'And part of that is doing well against your rivals as it stops them gaining on you.' Â
