We didn't deserve to get a win from the game.

Shrewsbury really did a good job on us defensively and stopped us building up any combinations or situations to create the clear-cut chances we've had.

Gareth Evans had a header in the second half which was well saved.

But apart from that they had a big, powerful back four and an experienced player in front of them.

Blues striker Oli Hawkins

Shrewsbury made it tough for us, they had a lot of the ball in the first half and in the second half we were on top, the crowd were on top, but maybe it didn't go our way like last week.

It was an ugly game, both teams battled, there were a lot of tackles, a lot of long balls, and it was a different feel to last week, when we felt like we could score with every attack.

We had to be patient and, at 1-0 down, then had to fight back to get the draw.

John Askey - Shrewsbury manager

I'm disappointed for the players as they worked so hard.

To come away with just a point I thought was unfair today.

We've conceded again to a penalty, we've had two calls for a penalty and not had them, the referee didn't give it the linesman gave it.

I don't know if it was a penalty from where I was but from what I saw it wasn't.

Pompey were fortunate to escape with a draw after an awful display against struggling Shrewsbury.

The Shrews hadn't won a league match this season '“ but looked set for victory after Greg Docherty's 74th-minute strike.

That would have been a deserved outcome for a well below-par Blues, despite a better second-half showing.

Then substitute Brett Pitman preserved Pompey's unbeaten league record with a penalty three minutes from time.

Pompey rode their luck to grab a point to keep up their unbeaten start to the league season.

The pundits and bookies had this down as a home banker with the Blues flying high as winless Shrewsbury arrived at Fratton Park.

Giving the game that build-up created a shiver of concern it would be anything but as straightforward as the billing suggested '“ and so it proved.

Shrewsbury were the better side in the first half as they set themselves up frustrate Kenny Jackett's men, with their confidence growing as they went close on a number of occasions.

Pompey were better after the break but could only count Gareth Evans' header, which was superbly saved, as a clear chance before Brett Pitman levelled from the spot with three minutes left.
