But who are the players who’ve shone brightest so far? And who are the men who have failed to come up to scratch to date?
Blues writer Jordan Cross has assessed John Mousinho’s squad, given his view on their performances and rated their efforts to this point in the campaign.
5. Zak Swanson - 7
Can count himself unlucky to have started just three league games to date amid a total 11 outings. The quality of his chief competitor, Joe Rafferty, has been behind that. Been caught out on one or two occasions, but has also been right among his side's top performers on many others. To do with that amid the loss of his mother is a testament to Swanson's character. 6. Sean Raggett - 7
Been relegated to a back-up role for most of those season, with that reality none of his doing but about how Regan Poole and Conor Shaughnessy have excelled. Whenever called upon has been totally dependable and now a huge period lies ahead with Poole out for the season. Photo: Jason Brown
7. Regan Poole - 9
Pompey fans are in mourning at the loss of arguably their team's top performer this term. Has provided an intoxicating mix of defensive resolve, quality on the ball and relentless energy. The news of the Wales international's season-ending injury arrived as a devastating blow, with the fact many are worried about the impact it will have on the promotion push a testament to Poole's impact. 8. Conor Shaugnessy - 9
The form of the summer arrival from Burton Albion has been a stunning surprise. The fact he's delivered such outstanding displays after missing out on a squad place on the opening day is testament to the leftfield nature of the Irishman's emergence. Defensively stoic with an eye-catching range of passing and desire to step out with the ball. Throw in the late goals and Shaughnessy may have just overtaken Regan Poole as Pompey's top performer in recent weeks. Photo: Jason Brown
