After a 0-0 stalemate, Alex Bass was the hero as he saved two spot kicks as the Blues progressed into the third round.

First chance of the evening...

37: The first chance of the evening falls to the hosts as Cook dispossesses Jacobs before teeing up Lewis, whose drilled shot glides just wide of the far post

Close encounter so far...

30: Still no clear cut chances to report as of yet as Downing is unable to gain any real connection following a corner as the ball trickles wide

The central defender's 90-minute appearance against Wimbledon in the Papa John's Trophy last week represents Downing's only run-out to date this term. He clearly needs match time under his belt and the chance to prove that he should be taken seriously in the battle to form part of the Blues' defensive unit. A strong, commanding performance against the non-league side would be a good starting place to do just that. The central defender's 90-minute appearance against Wimbledon in the Papa John's Trophy last week represents Downing's only run-out to date this term. 9: Pompey enjoying a lot of the ball with the hosts looking defensively resolute. Izzy Kaba is already causing problems down the right-hand-side

Somehow the attacking midfielder is clearly well down the pecking order at Fratton Park - a fact highlighted by Danny Cowley's decision to play Reeco Hackett-Fairchild instead of Ronan Curtis on the left wing against MK Dons on Saturday. Jacobs grew into last week's Papa John's Trophy defeat at Wimbledon and you get the sense that with minutes under his belt and injuries behind him, his influence will grow. Pompey currently lack creativity - and surely Jacobs needs a chance to show he's the one the Blues can rely on.Somehow the attacking midfielder is clearly well down the pecking order at Fratton Park - a fact highlighted by Danny Cowley's decision to play Reeco Hackett-Fairchild instead of Ronan Curtis on the left wing against MK Dons on Saturday.
