Pompey are keen to see the campaign played to a finale with the decision over League One’s fate moving closer after yesterday’s EFL board meeting.

That stance remains in the line with the stated ambition of the league, although there is a growing sentiment that may not be matched by its third-tier members.

The Blues’ preferred option does create a potential headache in terms of players’ contracts, with deals coming to a close on June 30.

Plans have been forwarded to extend those contracts by a month, but with it still unclear when football would return that could pave the way for the season continuing beyond that date.

That could then allow player movement before the 2020-21 season is completed - which wouldn’t be right in Burgess’ eyes.

He said: ‘I don’t think you should be able to start bringing players in. That would be crazy.

‘Even if you started before mid-June you’d get a few games.

‘So what, for the last five games you could bring in a load of players? That would be crazy.

‘Maybe you could see teams having a massive gamble, but I don’t think it would pay off because they’d need time to gel.

‘I’m not sure if many clubs would even use it, to be honest, maybe the odd player but I don’t think that would be fair at all.’
