James Bolton and Paul Downing have been saluted for their consummate professionalism while they remain on the Pompey periphery.

The duo have firmly been on the fringes of things this season – despite signing three-year deals when joining the Blues in June 2019 from Shrewsbury and Blackburn respectively.

Bolton’s been included in just one league match-day squad all season, while it’s been almost 14 months since Downing made his last third-tier appearance.

The senior pros have witnessed Haji Mnoga leap ahead of them in the pecking order. The 18-year-old made his Football League debut in the 3-1 win at Lincoln on Tuesday.

Despite being out of favour, Kenny Jackett insisted the pair have continued to work hard in training and try to win a spot back in the manager’s squad.

And Jackett stressed he wouldn’t hesistate to select either if defensive injuries do take a grip.

He said: ‘James is obviously frustrated but is very professional and trains very hard.

‘We don't have many injuries, which is good, but James will be keen to get his chance again and do everything he can to keep the shirt.

‘We have talked to him a lot and he has trained very well. He’s very professional and will stay prepared and motivated.

‘That is James’ way and I don’t think that is going to change any time soon.

‘Credit to him and Paul Downing. They haven’t been in the match-day 18 but have trained very well.

‘They push themselves to keep themselves very fit and have a good attitude.

‘For both of those guys, although they’re not in the squad at the moment, I won’t hesitate to use them if it’s right.’
