The arrangement has a recall clause in January, regarded as a standard stipulation for lengthy loan deals.

Nicolaisen, who is under contract for another three years, is then expected to return to Denmark and fight for a first-team place.

However, the 23-year-old insists he is open to the possibility of a remaining on the south coast beyond the agreement.

Although it’s a decision he will not have to take until next summer.

He told The News: ‘I’ve joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan.

‘There is a chance I could stay after that, but it’s not in the contract, there is no option.

‘I will take it from there and see how things go at the club. I have three years left on my contract at Midtjylland.

‘I’ve visited England a few times in the past for a long weekend, never to play football, so I’ll see how things turn out.

‘It’s the chance to play in England and have a lot of games, which I really need – and at a nice club.’

Nicolaisen’s FC Midtjylland boss is Brian Priske, a former Pompey right-back.

The Denmark international made 33 appearances during the 2005-06 campaign and played a key role as an ever-present in the Great Escape.

However, Priske’s south-coast stay would last only a year, before sold to Club Brugge in August 2006 by Harry Redknapp.

And Nicolaisen admits he picked the brains of his manager before himself making the switch to Fratton Park.

He added: ‘He has told me about Portsmouth, we have talked.

‘I asked him for his advice, he told me some good things. He mentioned the fans and the atmosphere, he talks about his time here fondly.

‘The first time I heard about Portsmouth was last weekend. It was quick, but I had a good feeling so we could fix it fast.

‘There were a few other clubs interested in me, such as in Germany. But I really wanted to come to England.’
