Supporters were horrified at the first-half defensive shambles that left Kenny Jackett’s side 3-1 down after half an hour – but heartened by the comeback and the eventual win in the shootout.

Mark Wilson said on Twitter: 'Tonnes of negativity as expected, a wins a win and at this stage that's what we need. Remember last season when we started poorly.'

Richard James Grazier tweeted: 'Our defence took social distancing to the next level today!'

There was plenty of praise for penalty hero Craig MacGillivray, who saved three of Stevenage's attempts.

Mike Shipp said: 'The number on MacGillivray's shorts is there for a reason.'

Greg Adam added: '(MacGillivray) should be number 1. Not knocking Bass but we can't afford to lose big Mac especially if Bass was sold.'

Pompey Pedro said on Twitter: Say what you want about Kenny being ruthless... but he’s been (just about) justified with his brutal treatment of Alex Bass today.'

LJ Mourby added: MacGillivray waited patiently for his chance. Got it. Then stepped up to get us a win! Funny enough we didn’t concede in the 2nd half after he came on. Give him his number one spot back. '

Pompey Blue added: 'Spin it whatever way you want but in the most part that was a horrendous performance.'

Meanwhile, Anton Dewing had a view on the colours on show after watching the game: 'Who’s idea was it for Pompey to wear orange away against Stevenage who wear red'n'white stripes? My eyes are hurting.'
