New head coach Danny Cowley has already implemented parts of his football philosophy in a short space of time.
Different formations have been used, alongside a mantra of fast attacking football and playing out from the back.
Some players, let’s be honest, have adapted better than others.
And with Cowley and his brother Nicky earmarked for a long-term Fratton Park stay, they will naturally look to bring in their own players to suit their needs.
But what does that mean for the curreny squad?
Here, Freddie Webb looks at each first-teamer to decide whether they have a future at Fratton Park beyond this season.
1. Craig MacGillivray (Keeper)
Age: 28. Total appearances: 133. Sats this season: 50 appearances, 16 clean-sheets.
Contract Expiry Date: June 2021
Verdict: Pompey’s starting keeper has stood out for his shot-stopping and imperious command of the penalty area.
His heroics in the Papa John’s Trophy final, where he almost single-handedly dragged Pompey to consecutive cups, is definitely a key highlight.
Work needs to be done to quicken his distribution to suit the Cowleys' style of play. But could he be one to be sacrificed - especially with Bass waiting in the wings when fit. Photo: Dennis Goodwin
2. Lewis Ward (keeper)
Age: 24. Total appearances: 0. Stats this season: 0 appearances
Contract Expiry Date: May 2021
Verdict: With on-loan Ward not making a Pompey appearance so far, and Alex Bass returning from injury, he’ll likely return to Exeter City at the end of the season. Photo: Joe Pepler
3. Alex Bass (keeper)
Age: 23. Total appearances: 34. Stats this season: 5 appearances, 2 clean-sheets.
Contract Expiry Date: June 2023
Verdict: Bass’ development has been blighted by injury this term, with the academy graduate twice suffering a hairline fracture in his lower-leg - including a loan spell at Southend.
He's been impressing the Cowleys, though, and is likely to be back in contention for the No1 spot next season. Photo: Simon Davies
4. Callum Johnson (Right-back)
Age: 24. Total appearances: 45. Stats this season: 45 appearances, 1 goal, 2 assists
Contract Expiry Date: June 2022
Verdict: Johnson has stabilised the right-back slot and made it his own since signing from Accrington last summer.
Defensively reliable and progressive enough when venturing forward, the 24-year-old has been consistent at both ends of the pitch.
His well-rounded capabilities are useful to Pompey regardless of what league they’re in, so he should be kept long-term. Photo: Daniel Chesterton
