Kenny Jackett equals Portsmouth scoring record as Blues hit League One goal heights
Northampton’s demolition equalled Kenny Jackett’s biggest winning margin since taking charge at Fratton Park.
It’s also the eighth time in 136 league fixtures that his team has netted more than three goals in a match.
The Blues have catapulted themselves into League One’s highest scorers following a flurry of goals in the last fortnight.
In terms of the most emphatic scorelines under Jackett, it also matched the 5-1 demolition of Bradford in March 2019.
On that occasion, Ben Close struck twice along with Gareth Evans, Tom Naylor and Jamal Lowe.
Hope Akpan responded for the visitors who, at the season’s end, finished bottom of League One to warrant relegation.
In total, of Jackett’s 96 wins in 180 matches as Pompey boss, 11 have been secured after scoring more than three goals.
In the FA Cup there has been Maidenhead (4-0) and Barnsley (4-2), while the Blues defeated Gillingham 4-0 in the Checkatrade Trophy in September 2018.
The remaining eight games to feature large winning scorelines have arrived in League One action
Jackett’s eighth match at Pompey’s helm yielded a 4-1 triumph over Fleetwood at Fratton Park in September 2017.
That would be the sole occasion in 2017-18 that they registered more than three goals in a game as they claimed eighth place upon their League One return.
In 2018-19, a campaign which saw Pompey leading the table for three-and-a-half month, there were six scorelines of four goals-plus.
These consisted of Gillingham and Maidenhead in cup competitions, in addition to Oxford (4-1) and Fleetwood (5-2) in the league.
As previously mentioned, Bradford (5-1) were taken apart in March 2019, while Rochdale (4-1) suffered a Fratton Park loss the following month.
Last term, Southend were handed a 4-1 Fratton Park defeat in November 2019, while Championship Barnsley were eliminated 4-2 from the FA Cup.
This season has now seen Jackett’s side put four past opposition twice in a month.
Firstly, there was the 4-2 success at Burton at the start of October, with Marcus Harness helping himself to a hat-trick.
Then there was Tuesday – with Harness again among the scorers, along with Marquis (two) and Curtis against Northampton.
Incidentally, since Jackett took charge in June 2017, his Pompey teams have scored 267 goals in 180 matches.
That’s an average of 1.58 goals per game in all competitions, albeit primarily at League One level.
