Once wanted by Portsmouth - and Charlton forward could again be a summer target if promoted

Victory at The Valley will be Kenny Jackett’s primary focus as he aims to arrest Pompey’s form of two successive defeats.

The Blues can ill-afford another slip-up against another promotion rival after successive losses to Hull and Lincoln.

However, ever the pragmatist and forward-planner, the boss may have an eye on one of Charlton’s key players on Saturday.

Chuks Aneke is someone who’s been on Pompey's radar before – and could reappear on their shopping list this summer if a Championship return is achieved.

It was following the play-off semi-final defeat to Sunderland in the 2018-19 season when Aneke first came to the Blues’ attention.

After Omar Bogle and James Vaughan's loan deals expired, Oli Hawkins and Brett Pitman remained the only senior striking options at Fratton Park.

Aneke certainly met that criteria. The ex-Arsenal trainee had plundered 19 goals in 41 appearances for MK Dons as they sealed automatic promotion from League Two.

But because Aneke was out of contract at Stadium MK, it meant Pompey were one of several clubs in a long queue of admirers.

At the time he was one of the most attractive free agents in the lower leagues with a sterling pedigree and his best years still ahead of him.

And it was Charlton, who'd achieved League One promotion via the play-offs, who Aneke would opt for.

The Valley would provide him with a maiden opportunity of Championship football, forcing Pompey's attention to turn to Ellis Harrison.

In truth, though, Aneke's first crack in the second tier was one to forget.

He bagged just once in 20 appearances and was hampered by injuries as Lee Bowyer's men were relegated.

Since dropping back to League One, however, the ex-England youth international has flexed his muscle and displayed his prowess.

Aneke’s netted 10 times in 23 outings so far this campaign, including in the Addicks' 2-0 win at Fratton Park in October.

What makes his tally more impressive is that Charlton have been wary of his previous injury problems.

As a result, they’ve consciously limited his game time to avoid another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

By Bowyer’s own admission, Aneke would be plying his trade in the Championship but for his setbacks.

Even still, you’d imagine the 27-year-old will want another opportunity to feature in the second tier come the end of this season.

Aneke’s two-year deal expires in June. Should the Addicks fail in their bid for promotion, the marksman will once again be in demand.

If Pompey were to go up, it would scarcely be a surprise if Aneke reappeared on Jackett’s hit list.

He’s been an admirer before and that’s unlikely to have changed.

The Blues will likely require an additional striker, with the currently out-of-favour Jordy Hiwula's deal expiring, leaving only Harrison and John Marquis as options.

Aneke would undoubtedly be someone who could replace the speed of Hiwula if he heads for the exit door.

Three points are paramount against Charlton – but it’s also a chance to scout someone who could again be on Pompey's radar first-hand.
