The in-form Aussie is one of nine members of Kenny Jackett’s squad whose deal expires at the end of the season.

The implementation of the League One salary cap means the Blues can currently only offer contracts at the divisional average of around £1,750 a week.

Williams can understand why Pompey are unable to enter negotiations regarding players’ futures.

‘The club has assets and it's quite tricky to keep assets in this kind of situation because football is a short career.

‘Of course, I'd definitely love to stay. My family is settled down here, I love it and I know what sort of force we would be if we were to get up to the Championship.

Pompey’s victory at Ipswich moved them up to third in the League One table.

The Blues are firmly in the race for automatic promotion and now sit a point outside the top two.

Williams knows that’s a way the Blues can keep their assets.

He added: ‘Ultimately, getting promotion would squash it and we wouldn't have a salary cap. It's in everyone's best interest to be promoted.’
