Portsmouth braced for bad news over ex-Gillingham man after fresh set-back during injury return

The left-back was handed his first outing in seven matches after being sidelined by a groin problem collected last month at Barnsley.

He replaced the in-form Jack Sparkes at Cambridge United in John Mousinho’s starting XI, yet came off with an ankle issue early on.

Ogilvie left the Abbey Stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot following the goalless draw as the Blues extended their lead at the top of the table to four points.

Pompey’s medical staff will now assess the extent of the damage, but Mousinho admitted his concern.

He told The News: ‘It’s not great, he’s on crutches and has a boot on.

‘I saw it really early on and sent Jack out to warm up, I didn’t know what he had done, I thought it was a muscular injury.

‘It’s not, he slipped, there was no contact, nobody near him, so it’s a bit of a concern. We are really gutted for him and he’s disappointed as well, so we’ll see what happens Wednesday and Thursday and see how that settles down.

‘We’ll probably be scanning it and then I’ll be able to give you a bit more information at the back end of the week.

‘It’s nothing to do with his previous groin injury, which was a muscular injury.’

Ogilvie was a league ever-present, starting their opening eight fixtures, until sustaining an injury in the second half at Barnsley.

Yet Sparkes has thrived in his absence, creating a genuine battle for the left-back spot.

Mousinho added: ‘I feel for him, Connor has hardly been injured in his career. The disappointment he felt at Barnsley was tough for him to take because he was playing so well and got a goal that night.

‘Then he’d come back into the side at Cambridge and was looking forward to getting going, so it’s tough for him.

‘That’s one of the reasons we’ve got the squad, Jack was incredibly unlucky to lose his place in the side and I thought did really well coming off the bench.’
