That figure includes player bonuses, taxes, National Insurance contributions and agent fees among others.

Squads are also limited to 22 players above the age of 21.

As the uncertainty of whether a salary cap would be introduced has loomed for several months, it caused Pompey to take a cautious approach to their summer business.

The Blues have only made one signing to date, with Sean Raggett returning on a permanent basis following his season-long loan from Norwich.

Lee Brown also agreed a new two-year deal at Fratton Park.

Pompey currently have 19 senior players under contract, which means they have three squad berths remaining.

The Blues boss said: ‘There’s naturally been some caution, which I think most clubs have done.

‘We have been cautious because the salary cap coming in changes so many things.

‘Either way, we are confident that we can adapt – and we will have to adapt.

‘If those are the rules then we’ll have to work out a way to be successful.

‘Some clubs have been ploughing on with recruitment, but it depends on the number of contracted players you have already.

‘If those club have a low amount, then with or without the salary cap they knew they’d need some players.

‘We’re at the 19 mark in terms of senior players contract, having been pleased to add Sean Raggett and Lee Brown, who add balance to the side.

‘There won’t be wholesale changes but would we like to add some players? Yes, we would.’

Jackett’s pleased with how his set-up is looking ahead of a renewed League One promotion push.

And he believes the younger players around his side, such as Haji Mnoga and Joe Hancott, are capable of stepping up if required.

He added: ‘We think our numbers will be okay and have some good young players under the age of 21.

‘If there are injuries, we have some good young players who’ve been training with us this week and can step in and do well.’
